Exploring Rio October 2012

I was in Rio for a Conference, the Global Economic Symposium 2012, to present a private project on financing education in developing countries. I had a few extra days to discover Rio.
My absolute highlight was the Sugar Loaf Mountain. I have seen some nice spots in the world but the view from the Sugar Loaf is just one in a lifetime experience. It is simply stunning!

 Other places I really enjoyed:
  • ·         Santa Teresa - charming architecture and cobbled streets: best food and live music in town, interesting art scene with a lot of graffiti
·         Parque das Ruinas with its beautiful view of the Sugar Loaf Mountain, also a good spot to take a short break and enjoy some Brazilian snacks
·         Escadaria Selaron - homage to the Selaron artist who decorated them with colored and mirrored mosaic tiles
·         Of course Corcovado - the Christ Statue
·         Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon beach: Brazilians with the variety of skin colors are indeed good looking and body-conscious people, everyone (old and young) is running at the beach, many free gym facilities right at the beach

·         Lapa and its nightlife, nothing better that dancing the Forró
I had also the pleasure to meet many locals, for example through a Kenyan friend Thais. She took us to the Jardim Botanico - Rio's botanical gardens founded in 1808 by Prince Regent Joao. It is very interesting to see all these species of plants plus rare orchids. The garden preserves nearly 8,000 plants.
Brazilians love fresh fruit. The Suco Shops are all over Rio and offer yummy fresh fruit juices. Great way to start the day! Thais took us to a 'kilo-restaurant': delicious food, especially the fresh fish and BBQ also great service - a real deal!

To sum it up, Rio was a great experience. I definitely want to come back!
